The Carbon team ships package minor releases every other week and when necessary, patch releases between minor versions to address bugs.
Carbon v11 focuses on quality of life updates for designers and developers including token and prop renaming for ease of use, component API updates for a more predictable developer experience, and introducing CSS grid for accurate layout building in line with the design language. With no changes to the IBM Design Language, v11 does not require any brand-driven product redesigns.
Carbon v11 was released on 31 March 2022.
Carbon v10 implemented the newly-updated brand expression (IBM Design Language v2) into components. The updated components required product teams to redesign product UIs and begin a migration plan to comply with IBM brand experience standards. As of September 30, 2024, all v10 assets have been deprecated.

Carbon released a new platform that allows maintainers to classify libraries and assets by applying a common schema. The new Carbon platform at next.carbondesignsystem.com allows all assets in both core and local systems (previously referred to as PALs) to be documented in one experience. The platform catalogs now include core and local systems, enabling teams to access documentation for all indexed assets and libraries without leaving the platform.
With the release of the new Carbon platform, the community index on the main Carbon website is no longer available. Community assets have been moved to the new platform.
