Presence is an in-memory key-value store backed by a CRDT (Conflict-Free Replicated Data Type). When a user is connected to the cluster, the state of that user is sent to all connected Realtime nodes.
Use Presence for user online/offline status and active user counters. Use it minimally due to computational overhead.
