List virtualization is the technique of only rendering the items that are currently in or close to the viewport in a large list. This greatly improves performance compared to rendering thousands of items upfront, since the browser would have to handle the sheer number of DOM nodes. Even a performant framework will be slow rendering a list with thousands of items if all nodes are rendered.
